SEASON PREVIEW 2002-03 | DYNAMIC DUOS
There are a number of great tandems in college basketball this season. A great opportunity to win comes about when you have balance. That is the case in any sport.
| |
| Kirk Hinrich shot 48 percent from three-point range last season. |
Having a combination of a good inside performer or a solid baseline player, coupled with a star on the perimeter, gives teams a major edge and helps them get to the winner's circle.
I go to my VBDI (Vitale Bald Dome Index) to come up with my top five duos in college basketball:
1. Kirk Hinrich/Nick Collison | Kansas
In Jayhawk land, this pair has experience, talent and the ability to play the game the way it should be played.
Roy Williams has a dandy duo with Collison on the baseline and Hinrich on the perimeter. They are unselfish and play with lots of passion and feeling. This tandem loves competing.
What a combination, baby! Steve Alford must eat his heart out because they are both from the state of Iowa! Oh well!
2. Jason Gardner/Luke Walton | Arizona
My preseason No. 1 team in America has a dynamite duo. Gardner has experience, quickness, scoring ability and shooting range. He blends in perfectly with Walton, one of the most unselfish players in America.
At the wing, Walton is an exceptional passer for a big man, and he learned the game well from his dad, the big redhead and newest ESPN analyst, Bill Walton. Luke has a great feeling for the game, but he needs to shoot the rock a little more.
3. David West/Romain Sato | Xavier
Next stop is Cincinnati, and it is not Bearcat Country. Thad Matta has a great combination in West and Sato.
Let me tell you: Sato became quite a performer last year. This year he should excel on the perimeter. Sato is a defensive stopper, has 3-point, area-code jumper range, and he has a horse inside in West.
With magnificent hands and an uncanny ability to get to the free-throw line, West is a member of my All-Rolls Royce squad.
4. Mo Williams/Erwin Dudley | Alabama
I really like this tandem in Crimson Tide Country. I'm talking hoops and not the pigskin baby as Mark Gottfried has done a phenomenal job with this program.
Williams was one of the premier diaper dandies in America last year, and he should be even better after working hard on his perimeter shooting during the offseason. He did a great job getting the ball inside to Dudley.
Dudley is automatic posting up in the low blocks. He does a great job establishing position, and he's a fighter on the glass, scrapping for rebounds. That's why he was one of the SEC's premier players last season.
5 Matt Bonner/Brett Nelson | Florida
In Gator Country, if they play up to their ability, they will be special. Nelson needs to return to the level and magical form of his sophomore season. If he does, he and Bonner will provide sweet music for Billy Donovan's team.
Nelson is a ball-handling wizard, but he has to understand shot selection and when to make the pass vs. the shot. He has great range when he is on.
Bonner has certainly become a major factor in Gainesville. Once upon a time, he was looked upon as a role player, but now, especially with Udonis Haslem gone, he's considered to be a major force. He can shoot outside and post up low.
