Smith has phenomenal game

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Jan. 16, 2006 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down.

STOCK UP

Carolina Panthers: Wide receiver Steve Smith caught 12 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers beat the Bears to advance to the NFC title game.

Seattle Seahawks: The Panthers will face Seattle as Mike Holmgren's team beat Washington despite the fact Shaun Alexander went down with a concussion early in the game.

Denver Broncos: The Broncos dethroned the Patriots with Champ Bailey making a key interception that turned the game around.

Pittsburgh Steelers: The Steel Curtain stunned the Colts in Indianapolis and I feel sorry for Tony Dungy as this was a tough way to end the season.

Larry Brown: The Knicks coach got his 1000th career win.

North Carolina: Women's coach Sylvia Hatchell got her 700th career victory.

Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers acquired relief pitcher Danys Baez from the Devil Rays.

STOCK DOWN

Venus Williams: She was upset in the first round of the Australian Open by an unranked Bulgarian opponent.

Keyon Dooling and Ray Allen: Both were suspended for fighting during an NBA game. Dooling received a five-game suspension, while Allen was sidelined for three games.

Kentucky: This basketball team has really been struggling as they've lost back-to-back home games for the first time since 1989.

USC: The football team has lost a lot of players to the NFL draft via early entry. Pete Carroll will find a way to keep the Trojans among college football's elite, but it won't be easy.

St. Louis Blues: The Blues are 1-8 in their last nine games and it appears St. Louis will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1979, at least when they've had playoffs.

Montreal Canadiens: The Canadiens fired coach Claude Julien over the weekend.
