NBA's second season is heating up

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

May 4, 2005
Let's talk some NBA hoops ... I've watched some of the NBA playoffs, and I find it interesting that there is less of a home-court advantage in the postseason.

On the professional level, guys are not intimidated by the crowds as much, especially after playing so many regular-season games. They're in familiar situations, and they play their best this time of the year. They are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge, with so much on the line.

I have always felt that NBA players are the greatest athletes in the world.
The playoffs have been competitive – think about some of the close contests. Yes, the top-seeded Heat and Suns swept the Nets and Grizzlies respectively, but look at how close the Boston-Indiana and Dallas-Houston series have been.

I have always felt that NBA players are the greatest athletes in the world. I know some people get annoyed when I say that, but you can talk about baseball, football, hockey, soccer, you name it – and then watch the mobility and agility on the court in an NBA game.

Look at a player like Dwyane Wade, and watch what he can do with the basketball. Watch some of the big men in the league – guys like Kevin Garnett and Amare Stoudemire – and see what they can do with their incredible moves and great strength.

By the way, I had an interesting argument with a friend recently. He said that if the Cavaliers offered the Heat LeBron James for Wade, the Heat should not make that move. But I totally disagree.

I feel that LeBron James will be the premier player in the NBA for years to come. I love Mr. Wade, but if I were Miami's GM, I'd have to make that trade if it were ever offered. I doubt Dan Gilbert, the new Cavaliers owner, would make such a swap, though LeBron could eventually file for free agency.
