Stern sends right message

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Nov. 22, 2004 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down ...

David Stern -- The NBA commissioner acted swiftly and made the right decision in suspending several NBA players who were involved in Friday night's brawl. Stern rightfully suspended Ron Artest for the rest of the season without pay.

Edgerrin James, Peyton Manning -- James ran for 204 yards while Manning threw four more touchdown passes in a win over Chicago. Manning has 35 TD passes already this season, and he has a shot at Dan Marino's single-season record of 48 set in 1984.

Barry Bonds -- Bonds won his seventh MVP award, and his fourth in a row.

Kurt Busch -- Busch hung on to win the Nextel Cup points title.

Purdue QB Kyle Orton -- Orton passed for 522 yards and six touchdowns in a rout over Indiana.

Jim Boeheim -- Boeheim got career win No. 680 as Syracuse beat Mississippi State and Memphis, both ranked teams, at the Coaches vs. Cancer event.

Ron Artest -- Are you kidding me? He wanted a month off to promote an album, and now he has the rest of the season off. You can't go into the stands after a fan.

Stephen Jackson, Jermaine O'Neal -- Both players also did the wrong thing and were punished, as was Ben Wallace.

Some Detroit Pistons fans -- Some fans should be ashamed of themselves ... just because you spend money on a ticket doesn't mean you have the right to behave in an unruly manner.

San Francisco 49ers -- The 49ers fell to 1-9 and didn't put up a fight in a 35-3 loss to Tampa Bay. The Niners have given up at least 21 points in each game this season.

North Carolina -- The Tar Heels men's team was stunned by Santa Clara at the Pete Newell Challenge. Raymond Felton didn't play due to a one-game suspension, but coach Roy Williams' team should have still won.

UConn women's hoop -- UConn was upset by North Carolina.
