Ichiro sets hit record

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Oct. 5, 2004 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down ...

Ichiro Suzuki -- The Seattle Mariners star broke George Sisler's 1920 single-season hit record. Ichiro finished with 262 hits (Sisler had 257 hits in a 154-game schedule).

Houston Astros, Anaheim Angels -- Both teams rallied to make the playoffs.

Purdue QB Kyle Orton -- Orton threw for 385 yards and four touchdowns at Notre Dame.

Georgia, Auburn - Both teams scored impressive SEC wins over the weekend, beating LSU and Tennessee, respectively.

Emmitt Smith -- Emmitt ran for more than 100 yards at age 35, only the second NFL player to do that, joining Marcus Allen.

Louisville RB Eric Shelton -- Shelton scored five touchdowns against East Carolina.

Chicago Cubs -- The Cubs fell apart down the stretch (losing seven of nine) and missed out on the playoffs. Also, how can anyone criticize broadcaster Steve Stone for being honest in questioning the Cubs' failure?

Oakland Athletics -- The A's also blew a big lead down the stretch and were passed by the Angels.

Jose Guillen -- The Angels slugger was suspended for the rest of the season. He has been a problem, much like Raul Mondesi was.

Milton Bradley -- Bradley displayed a tirade toward fans in Los Angeles.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers -- Both teams remain winless, while the Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans fell to 1-3.
