Sept. 7, 2004 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down ...
STOCK UP: ESPN celebrates 25th anniversary
ESPN -- We at ESPN are celebrating our 25th anniversary today, baby! I sat courtside as the analyst for the network's first college basketball broadcast in December 1979.
Ichiro Suzuki -- Ichiro continues to make a run at the record for most hits in one season (George Sisler holds the record with 257 hits in 1920). Last week he had several games with three or more hits.
Houston Astros -- The Astros are right in the hunt for the wild card, having won 10 straight and 18 of their past 21. Manager Phil Garner has done a good job taking over from Jimy Williams, and the Killer B's have been hitting – Carlos Beltran, Jeff Bagwell, Lance Berkman and Craig Biggio.
Vijay Singh -- Singh is now the top-ranked golfer in the world after beating Tiger Woods on Monday.
Kay-Jay Harris -- The West Virginia running back ran for 337 yards and four touchdowns vs. East Carolina.
Vernand Morency -- The Oklahoma State running back ran for 261 yards vs. UCLA.
Rutgers -- Rutgers got a big football victory over Michigan State.
STOCK DOWN: Kevin Brown breaks hand
Kevin Brown -- The New York Yankees pitcher broke his left hand (non-throwing hand) by punching a wall after a loss. He may not be back during the regular season while the Yanks battle for a playoff berth.
Notre Dame -- The Irish opened their football season with a loss for the third time in 18 years, falling to BYU. Notre Dame punted 11 times, the most since 1982.
De La Salle High School -- The football power saw its 151-game win streak snapped at Bellevue, Washington.
