Admiral, Duncan prove that staying can pay off

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

June 16
What a great way for David Robinson to close out his career and for Tim Duncan to cap off another MVP season! The San Antonio Spurs and their dynamic duo won another NBA title with an 88-77 comeback win over the New Jersey Nets on Sunday.

I was so thrilled to see the Admiral finish as a key contributor, grabbing 17 rebounds, hitting 6-of-8 shots and scoring 13 points in 31 minutes in the deciding Game 6. Duncan almost put up a quadruple-double in a dominant performance (21 points, 20 rebounds, 10 assists, eight blocks).

I remember attending a player-of-the-year dinner when Robinson was being honored at Navy.

Robinson talked about how blessed he was, how important his mother and father were in his upbringing. I remember the person sitting next to me, saying how special it would be to coach that young man.

That person was Bobby Knight.

To all the youngsters going early into the NBA draft, you can learn from Robinson and Duncan. Both stayed in college through their senior seasons, and they just got better and better. See how they made multi-millions and still got their rings!

And they developed not only as players, but as people. They have been the total package -- guys who made the transition to the wear and tear of pro basketball and who will easily succeed in moving from sports to the real world.

Robinson and Duncan have proved that sometimes nice guys do finish first!

Duncan is so solid, and he has earned his back-to-back MVP honors. He plays on both sides of the ball and he knows when to give up the ball at the right time. Look at the open jumpers Stephen Jackson hit down the stretch in Game 6 off of Duncan passes.

Both Robinson and Duncan put on a show on Sunday night. Unfortunately, it's the last time we will witness the Admiral putting on that show. He had a great career on the court, and he will be a success off of it.
