Business-like Spurs await next foe

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Wow, the Los Angeles Lakers not only lost in game six to the San Antonio Spurs, it was blowout city! Who would have though Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and Co. would be embarrassed on their own home floor. They were humiliated in front of their crowd.

Tony Parker and Shaquille O'Neal
Tony Parker, left, helped send Shaq and the Lakers home for the summer.
What a performance by Tim Duncan with 37 big ones! Tony Parker, who is just 20 years of age, dominated against the defending champs. Parker was maligned through most of the season, and people wondered if San Antonio could win big without a true, legitimate, experienced point guard.

Parker shut down his critics by playing so well, helping set up his teammates. Gregg Popovich has done a magnificent job putting all the parts together. They didn't have to worry about flash and pizzazz. This team simply went about its business and that is why the Spurs are the top seed out West.

Now San Antonio waits for Game 7 between the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks. The Kings are trying to hang on without star forward Chris Webber up front. Dallas has the home-court advantage for the deciding game, and the Mavericks already had a tough deciding game on its home court against Portland.

Don Nelson's team had a 3-0 lead against the Blazers before dropping three in a row. Then in a tight Game 7, the Mavs showed something by pulling away down the stretch.

San Antonio ended the three-year dominance of the Lakers. There is no doubt that the hierarchy in Los Angeles will meet to discuss the future. The best tandem in basketball still puts on the Laker uniform, but two guys simply won't win in a game of five-on-five.

The Lakers need help badly. Will Phil Jackson be able to endure another season of pressure coming back from his recent angioplasty? You have to wonder what is going through this mind following the passing of his former teammate, Dave DeBusschere?

Knowing the competitive nature of Jackson and Bryant, there were no excuses in the locker room and this team will come back fighting and motivated next season. A winner never makes alibis.

Will Rick Fox and Robert Horry be back? Will the Lakers add free agents like Scottie Pippen or Karl Malone? Stay tuned, since this Hollywood soap opera figures to get even more interesting following the disappointment of defeat.
