Jury duty is just awesome, baby

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

April 22
I was fortunate enough to fulfill my civic duty by serving jury duty this week. I really was looking forward to it because the heart and soul of our legal system is the jury. To be a part of it, sitting in a room, waiting anxiously to see if my number would be called, was interesting to say the least.

I've always found the law intriguing and exciting.
Finally, my number was picked and I went into a courtroom. I sat with other prospective jurors, where we were interviewed by the prosecution and the defense.

The case involved a misdemeanor. Six jurors were selected -- and I was one of them! I was really pumped up, ready to serve in making a decision.

I have always been intrigued with law. As a youngster growing up in New Jersey, I spent lots of time observing some of the great area lawyers at the Bergen County Courthouse.

I've always found it intriguing and exciting. Also, my son-in-law, former Notre Dame quarterback Thomas Krug, works in the prosecutor's office in Sarasota County in Florida. At times, law has been a topic of conversation at the dinner table.

When I and my fellow jurors arrived Tuesday to do our duty, we were told by the judge that there was good news and bad news. The good news was we would be released early. The bad news was we that while were ready and willing to serve on the jury, we would be disappointed to not have a chance to render a verdict. Charges were dropped and the case was closed.

At least I was part of a system that I respect dearly. I enjoyed the camaraderie with the other jurors.
