Wake's Howard leads way on All-ACC team

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Feb. 28
It's time to have a little fun. It's always interesting to go conference by conference and try to pick the best of the best. For the next couple of weeks, I'm going to unveil my All-Conference teams. I will also include my player of the year, coach of the year and diaper dandy of the year.

This is all subjective and for fun. Obviously, people have their opinions. I will give it to you from my heart, starting with the ACC...

All-ACC Team, Awards
Steve Blake -- Maryland
Julius Hodge -- N.C. State
Josh Howard -- Wake Forest
Dahntay Jones -- Duke
Edward Scott -- Clemson

Player of Year
Josh Howard -- Wake Forest
Coach of Year
Skip Prosser -- Wake Forest
Diaper Dandy of Year
Chris Bosh -- Georgia Tech

A number of ACC stars jump out at you. Look at the job being done by coach Skip Prosser at Wake Forest. It all starts with multitalented Josh Howard, a do-it-all type of player. He is dynamite in transition, tough on the glass and exceptional as a defensive stopper. Howard is the catalyst for the successful Demon Deacons.

Howard is not only a member of my All-ACC team but also my choice for league player of the year.

Also up front, I'll take N.C. State's Mr. Versatility, Julius Hodge. It was good to hear that he plans to return to school next season instead of jumping to the pros.

How good is Hodge? Just ask UNC coach Matt Doherty. With eight seconds on the clock, Hodge made the big shot that sent the game into overtime; he was brilliant in the extra period, helping the Wolfpack get a major road win over the Tar Heels.

What about the job coach Gary Williams has done at Maryland? Think about a program losing three big names to the NBA -- Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter and Chris Wilcox. Imagine if Wilcox came back?

My choice for All-ACC point guard is Steve Blake, Maryland's maestro man and orchestra leader, who has been brilliant together with backcourt mate Drew Nicholas. Blake has been more assertive on the offensive end. Nicholas would be my sixth man on the All-ACC team. He was brilliant shutting down Duke's J.J. Redick in the second half at the Comcast Center earlier this season.

A young Duke squad has been getting better and better, and one key has been senior Dahntay Jones. He came to the Blue Devils as a defensive stopper but has added offense to his game. Jones is so explosive in transition -- who could forget his monster dunk vs. Virginia? He has also improved his range as a shooter and isn't afraid to attack the basket off the dribble.

Finally, rounding out my team is Clemson's Edward Scott. He distributes the basketball, has been called upon to do more scoring and has responded to challenges in a positive way. Clemson is improved under coach Larry Shyatt, and Scott hasn't received as much national publicity as he has deserved.

My coach of the year is Wake's Prosser. He lost so much from last season, including Darius Songaila and Antwan Scott. Prosser has taken a number of young players and blended them with the veterans to make an ACC contender. The Demon Deacons, looking for their first regular-season league title since 1962, have played brilliant basketball all season long.

My top ACC diaper dandy is Chris Bosh of Georgia Tech. He's an inside force who can rebound and block shots with the best in the ACC.
