Either Duke or Wake will stand alone

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Jan. 10
Isn't it amazing that we are down to just two undefeated teams left in college basketball? How long is Indiana's run of being the last team to go through an entire season unblemished (32-0 in 1976) going to last? Bobby Knight's Hoosiers featured the likes of Scott May, Kent Benson, Quinn Buckner, Bobby Wilkerson and Tom Abernathy.

Chris Duhon
Chris Duhon is averaging nearly eight assists a game for the young Blue Devils.
These days it is going to be difficult to go undefeated through a full season. There is so much parity in the sport, plus the three-point shot has been a great equalizer. It helps creates upsets with the momentum it gives teams. Another aspect that makes it more difficult to go perfect is the number of games played -- more than ever, especially as you advance through the postseason.

Down on Tobacco Road on Sunday (6:30 p.m. ET), the two remaining unbeatens square off in an important ACC showdown. So there will be one left after Duke and Wake Forest, both currently 10-0, do battle.

The Demon Deacons have been a bit of a surprise since Skip Prosser's team was unranked in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. Wake Forest has had a few quality wins, beating Wisconsin, St. John's and a Richmond team that walked out of Xavier with an upset.

Let me tell you, I believe this Demon Deacons club will be a contender in the ACC all year long. They have great team chemistry, they hustle, and they have a star in veteran Josh Howard. He can make the big play, is an excellent offensive rebounder, plays solid defense and excels in transition.

Prosser's club will face tougher competition in league action, and his backcourt must be more consistent. Justin Gray and Taron Downey will face pressure as the Duke defense will come after them with full force. The Blue Devils don't have the superstar talent that they have had in the past, like a Jay Williams or Shane Battier, but they have a host of good players.

This Duke squad has versatility and depth, a perfect blend of youth and winning experience. Think about players like Chris Duhon, Dahntay Jones, Daniel Ewing, Casey Sanders and Nick Horvath. They have played in pressure situations and been a part of success. That breeds more success and rubs off on the diaper dandies.

Versus Wake Forest, J.J. Redick must get free to make that jumper; that didn't happen in the first half against Georgetown as the Hoyas denied him good looks at the basket. Redick will draw lots of attention, and he'll have to move without the ball and utilize screens. Duhon has been passing exceptionally well but must work better on his shot selection. I believe his three-point shooting is down because of his shot selection. He must understand that the line is back 19 feet, 9 inches, and that he doesn't have to make it from 30 feet!

Duke must also find a way to get some inside scoring from Shelden Williams, as well as Sanders. The Blue Devils need to find inside-outside balance offensively.

This should be an exciting matchup. After 326 Division I teams tipped it off to start the season in mid-November, we will be down to just one standing tall without an L.
