STOCK UP: Tar Heels, Hoosiers, Trojans, Bills, Boston Bruins
North Carolina's basketball team went 8-20 last season, but what a difference a year makes! Coach Matt Doherty's Tar Heels came into Madison Square Garden with lots to prove, and they walked out 5-0 with the Preseason NIT championship after big wins over Kansas and Stanford. Rashad McCants, Raymond Felton and Sean May were impressive as diaper dandies, but don't forget the play of super sophs Jackie Manuel (a defensive stopper), Melvin Scott and Jawad Williams. The Tar Heels are back, baby!
You also have to salute coach Mike Davis and Indiana for winning the Maui Invitational against a difficult field. Another diaper dandy, Bracey Wright, earned tourney MVP honors. The Hoosiers beat Massachusetts, Gonzaga and Virginia to capture the gold trophy.
USC football has made its move towards a BCS berth. The Trojans earned the W against Notre Dame on the same day the admissions officer in South Bend told USC QB Carson Palmer he couldn't go to the Golden Dome! Palmer was brilliant against the Irish, passing for 425 yards and four TDs.
Drew Bledsoe and the Buffalo Bills won a big game in the snow against the Miami Dolphins, withstanding a solid performance by Miami RB Ricky Williams.
I don't know much about hockey, but the Boston Bruins are off to a tremendous start at 16-3-3-1.
STOCK DOWN: UCLA, Cavs, 'Huskers, Sooners
UCLA's basketball team fell to 0-2 for the first time in 41 years. It's one thing to lose to Duke at a neutral site, but what about falling at home to San Diego? Former Bruin guard Brad Holland, now the coach at San Diego, was ecstatic as he led his team past the Bruins.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have lost 14 games in a row. Hey, can LeBron James come and help this franchise?
Nebraska's football program has really slipped, baby! The Cornhuskers finished the regular season 7-6, and with a losing record in the Big 12, after falling to Colorado (and the Buffs were without star RB Chris Brown).
Oklahoma lost to Oklahoma State for the second straight season, likely costing the Sooners a BCS berth.
