STOCK UP: Yao Ming, Mavs, Ohio State, Carson Palmer
I've been surprised with the success of Houston Rockets rookie center Yao Ming lately. Yes, he was shut down by the Clippers on Sunday, but he had a 31-point game earlier in the week, plus a 20-point effort in which he went 9-for-9, leading Charles Barkley to kiss Kenny Smith's "ass" (which turned out to be a donkey).
The Dallas Mavericks keep on rolling, moving to 13 in a row, baby!
Ohio State just keeps winning football games. Give the Buckeyes credit for going 13-0, and while there have been a number of close calls, coach Jim Tressel's team was impressive down the stretch against Michigan. Maurice Clarett is the most impressive freshman running back I've seen in the past 10 years.
Carson Palmer threw four touchdown passes in a blowout win over UCLA. Next up, the Trojans take on Notre Dame this Saturday. Palmer deserves some Heisman consideration.
STOCK DOWN: Wizards, Florida State, Iowa State, Packers, more
Michael Jordan and the Washington Wizards lost to the Memphis Grizzlies, giving coach Hubie Brown's team its first W of the season.
How about Florida State with four losses (and maybe a fifth if the Seminoles fall to Florida in the regular-season finale) going to the BCS? There should be a rule that a conference champion that isn't in the top 12 of the BCS shouldn't go to one of its bowl games.
Iowa State football beat Iowa and Nebraska earlier this season, but the Cyclones were upset at home by Connecticut. Give a salute to coach Randy Edsall as his team came on strong down the stretch.
The Green Bay Packers and Brett Favre have lost two in a row. The Bucs' defense was outstanding in holding Green Bay to one touchdown. Tampa Bay looks like the team to beat in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers were blown out 41-0 by the Atlanta Falcons and Michael Vick. And how could the New York Giants, in the thick of a playoff race in the NFC East, lose to the expansion Houston Texans? Special teams have been killing coach Jim Fassel's club.
