Stock Down: Team USA

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Sept. 9
Dick's Stock Watch identifies whose stock is up and whose is down over the past week across the world of sports.

You have to give credit to Richard and Oracene Williams for the great job they did in raising Venus and Serena Williams. Isn't it amazing to have two champion tennis players from the same household? These two young ladies do a phenomenal job on the tennis court, have a great attitude and handle themselves well. With her U.S. Open win over Venus on Sunday, Serena has won three Grand Slam events this year -- the first woman to do that since Martina Hingis in 1997.

Pete Sampras had a special run at the U.S. Open, winning his 14th Grand Slam singles championship. Pete, you should retire now and be with your beautiful wife Brigette and the baby coming soon. Enjoy this victory for a long time.

I was impressed by Miami in its win over Florida down in The Swamp. Willis McGahee is a special running back, and even though QB Ken Dorsey didn't have a great game, it was still a blowout. Give coach Larry Coker's team lots of credit as the best in the nation.

In the NFL, there were some solid showings by people in new places, like Redskins coach Steve Spurrier, Colts coach Tony Dungy and Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, who ran for over 100 yards in the win over the Lions.

The Angels and A's remain on fire. Anaheim has won 10 straight while Oakland is 22-1 in its last 23.

USA basketball gets a big-time stock down! I was really hurt watching the performance of Team USA at the World Basketball Championship. The Americans finished in sixth place, losing three straight to Argentina, Yugoslavia and Spain. It was really humiliating and embarrassing.

Dwayne Rudd of the Cleveland Browns gets the yo-yo award for throwing his helmet, leading to an additional play in which Kansas City's Morten Andersen kicked the game-winning field goal. His action cost his team the game.

Rutgers football hasn't been up in a while, but losing at home 34-11 to the University of Buffalo was really a downer for coach Greg Schiano's team.
