Stock soars for Texas Tech

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Jan. 28
Dick's Stock Watch identifies whose stock is up and whose is down over the past week across the world of sports.

Texas Tech is a great story in college basketball. I was there in Lubbock on Saturday watching the Red Raiders put on a clinic against Oklahoma. It was like watching Knight's old Indiana teams. Texas Tech is 15-3, incredible considering the program won nine games all of last season.

I was so happy for Drew Bledsoe as the New England Patriots made it to the Super Bowl. He has been on the sidelines for a long time, watching Tim Brady doing a super job. When Brady was hurt, Bledsoe stepped in and got the job done, with a quick touchdown pass. Troy Brown's stock is also up for a great job on the blocked kick and punt return. He also was outstanding catching passes. Bill Belichick deserves a lot of credit; a lot of people called for his firing early in the season.

The St. Louis Rams fought off the Eagles and Donovan McNabb. Is there a better running back in football than Marshall Faulk? No! Kurt Warner has been taking hits all season. It's great for a veteran like Aeneas Williams to get to the Super Bowl.

Congratulations to Jennifer Capriati on her comeback win at the Australian Open. She fought through 95 degree temperatures and a one set and 4-0 second-set deficit against Martina Hingis to prevail. Hingis had to put the match away and didn't. Conditioning is such a factor now and Capriati's paid off.

Illinois and Iowa had struggles over the weekend in the Big Ten. The Illini were blown away by Indiana as the Hoosiers his 17 trifectas. The Hawkeyes lost at Purdue, so Steve Alford's team is 1-4 in its last five games.

Mike Tyson's act has gotten old. It wasn't just the fight that broke out at the press conference; it was the foul language he used over and over in swearing at a reporter. Mike Tirico said it best the other day when he claimed people shouldn't even talk about Tyson. Oh well, I'm guilty of mentioning him!

I don't know much about hockey, red lines or blue lines, but I do know that it's all about "what have you done for me lately." The Dallas Stars get a "stock down" for firing coach Ken Hitchcock. He led the team to the Stanley Cup championship in 1999, back to the finals a year later, and his club was in position to make the playoffs this season.
