Super Seven shine above the rest

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Jan. 24
It is time to lay out my Super Seven -- that's right -- my best of the best, the top players in America so far this season.

It was not easy to limit the list to just seven. You can make a case for a number of other candidates. Here are my top seven as we head down the stretch towards Championship Week and then the big dance, baby!

Jason Williams, Duke
He is the premier player in America. All you have to do is go back and look at what he did in the second half against Kentucky. He is capable of taking over a game by himself, driving and penetrating or pulling up for a trifecta. Yes, he has had some problems from the foul line (remember the Florida State game). He is still the top player on my All-Rolls Royce list.

Drew Gooden, Kansas
He has been the best frontcourt player in America so far this season. I really believe the Jayhawks can make a run at the Final Four and cutting down the nets in Atlanta. Gooden had one stretch with seven straight double-doubles.

Juan Dixon, Maryland
He can beat you inside and outside, and he is one of the top defensive guards in the nation. Gary Williams has to be thrilled with his backcourt star.

Mike Dunleavy, Duke
Some have made a case that he is the best player in America, though I still go with Williams. Dunleavy is the lead player on my All-Will Smith team, Mr. Versatility. He can pass as well as any 6-foot-9 player in America.

David West, Xavier
The Musketeers have quietly warmed up. West has had some foul problems at times, but he can rebound and score inside with the best of them.

Tayshaun Prince, Kentucky
He has been in a slump, but Tubby Smith knows he can rely on his star in crunch time, like he did at Auburn when Prince hit a key three-pointer after the Tigers rallied to within four points.

Troy Bell, Boston College
He broke out of his slump with a solid second half against Duke. He scored 42 points against Iowa State earlier this season, hitting 17-of-17 from the foul line. I believe he will make a great pro down the line.

There you have it, the super seven. I know there are others worthy of consideration. Keep an eye on this group as they try to lead their respective teams to Atlanta, baby!
