Stock soars for Jordan (by 51 points)

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Dec. 31
Each week I post my Dick's Stock Market report on whose stock is up and whose is down across the world of sports.

Michael Jordan: After suffering the lowest scoring total of his career (six points), Michael the Magnificent scored 51 against the Hornets in a 107-90 win that snapped the Wizards' two-game losing streak.

Don Nelson: The Mavericks' coach nabbed his 1,000th coaching victory, and the red-hot Mavs have won nine in a row.

Major Applewhite: The Texas QB posted a brilliant performance in the Holiday Bowl, leading Texas from a 19-point deficit to a 47-43 win (37-for-55, 473 yards, four TDs). With all the controversy this season, what a way for Applewhite to close out his career.

Buccaneers' defense: The D led Tampa Bay to a 22-10 win over the Super Bowl champion Ravens. The Bucs have posted back-to-back brilliant performances, and Tony Dungy has the Bucs back in the playoffs.

Steve Phillips: The Mets' GM dealt for Mo Vaughn, so now the Mets have a new first baseman. If Vaughn stays healthy, look for him to hit 35 or more dingers and drive in 120-plus RBI. Phillips previously added Roberto Alomar and Roger Cedeno.

Indiana: Butler shocked Indiana 66-64 at the Indiana Classic. For 20 years, IU had been unblemished in its holiday tournament -- until now. Butler stays undefeated with the win.

Missouri: The Tigers started out 9-0, but lost to DePaul this past week to make it three straight losses. This will be a good test for bright young coach Quin Snyder. But life won't be easy in the Big 12, where Kansas and Oklahoma State loom.

Pac-10 football: The Pac-10 is 0-3 in bowl games (Stanford, USC, Washington have all lost). But the Big East is 3-0 (wins by BC, Syracuse and Pitt).
