There are many stars in college basketball. Guys like Jason Williams and Casey Jacobsen get a lot of publicity, so let's give some equal time to another group of players doing a great job.
I like to call this my All-SportsCenter team. This is a team of five players who deserve more publicity; these guys can flat-out play.
Let's start in Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton told me last year that he felt Maurice Baker had the potential to be a big-time PTPer. Baker is one of the premier players in the Big 12, and that is saying a lot in a league that includes Kareem Rush. Baker can do it on both ends of the court. He can distribute the rock, score and defend.
Preston Shumpert of Syracuse has been given a lot of credit for his scoring ability. He is a more versatile player; just look back at Syracuse's win over Wake Forest in the Preseason NIT finals. Shumpert was a key part of the pressure defense that led to a 14-0 run en route to the big W.
USC's Sam Clancy is one of the strongest forwards in America. The son of former NFL defensive lineman Sam Clancy can rebound and score, showing good shooting range. He's not afraid to step outside and can shoot the J. Henry Bibby is glad his powerful frontcourt star passed up the NBA to return to Los Angeles.
Western Kentucky's Chris Marcus is considered one of the top prospects for the NBA draft. The 7-foot-1 inside force is one of the nation's best shot blockers. He's a solid scoring threat for one of the nation's hot coaching names, Dennis Felton.
Steve Logan has been a key member of Bob Huggins' Cincinnati Bearcats. He is one of the top players in Conference USA, and his scoring and defensive abilities should help Cincinnati to another solid season.
There you have it, my All-SportsCenter team. Come on, give these guys some more pub, baby!
