College hoop needs more stars who stay

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

The college basketball world has received some great news from some star players.

Kareem Rush
There isn't much Kareem Rush can't do when the basketball is in his hands.
Guard Jason Williams said recently that he will be playing all four years at Duke. Stanford guard Casey Jacobsen has said he will come back next season. Missouri forward Kareem Rush, after suffering his injury, also claims he will return to college.

Yes, there are players who make these announcements and later change their minds.

But for now, this is good news. College is a great place to be, and more and more kids should realize that.

A lot of players go for the quick fix, the easy dollars. They chase the money and end up leaving school too early, going to the NBA before they are really prepared for the next level. It hurts the players and it hurts both the NBA and college basketball.

In college, these athletes are real BMOCs (big men on campus, baby!). They can get insurance policies to protect themselves against injuries. They can then get the big bucks later on, improving their long-term future by adequately preparing for the pros.

Look at kids like Joel Przybilla and Michael Redd. They are sitting on the pine in the NBA instead of enjoying another year in the Big Ten. They could have been working on their skills instead of suffering in their current situations.

I hope more kids will consider staying in school and enjoying the college life. I understand if there are need factors involved, but players with more collegiate experience will be better prepared for the lifestyle of the pros, the travel, the longer schedule, etc.
