I am a big college football fan. There is more than just college basketball to enjoy and I love attending games. I cannot wait for Friday night as I will be attending a battle of ranked teams -- West Virginia at South Florida.
That's right, the Bulls are ranked! Raymond James Stadium will be rocking and rolling with a record crowd for a South Florida home game. The atmosphere should be electric.
The South Florida success story is truly amazing. The program has had just one coach, and Jim Leavitt may be the best coach people across America have not heard of. He started football from scratch with the inaugural season in 1997 to I-A status in 2001, Conference USA in 2003 and now the Big East and BCS football in 2005.
Leavitt's program has made noise over the years. The upsets at Pittsburgh (2001), over Louisville (2005), at West Virginia (2006) and Auburn (this season) have proven that South Florida is for real.
My friends, there is so much talent produced out of the Florida scholastic scene, so Bulls fans should not be surprised with the success of the program. Friday night will be a good test of how far this team has progressed.
West Virginia deserves to be a contender for the national championship. Pat White and Steve Slaton may provide the toughest offensive one-two punch in America. Noel Devine has stepped up and contributed as well.
South Florida has an unsung quarterback in Matt Grothe. The sophomore from Lakeland, Fla., can run and pass. Last year in Morgantown, he completed 21-of-29 passes for 270 yards. He threw one touchdown pass and ran for another in a 24-19 stunner.
This should be excitement galore. I can't wait for this showdown!
