Robinson, Huskies nab weekly awards

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Guard Nate Robinson was the sparkplug for the Huskies in their three victories at the Great Alaska Shootout. Robinson's efforts earned him the Great Alaska MVP award.

His best showing came against Utah (29 points). The 5-foot-9 Robinson followed up with 19 points and eight assists vs. Oklahoma and 16 points (3-for-4 on trifectas) vs. Alabama in the championship game.

The Huskies showed why they are a legitimate contender in the Pac-10 by sweeping Utah, Oklahoma and Alabama to win the Great Alaska Shootout. Coach Lorenzo Romar has a talented and deep team that can apply full-court pressure. The Huskies won despite Brandon Roy suffering a hyperextended knee midway through the tournament.

The Bruins' backcourt tandem helped UCLA get a pair of wins over improved Western Illinois and UC-Irvine. Guard Arron Afflalo averaged 13.5 points in the two wins while Jordan Farmar showed leadership at the point-guard slot, averaging five assists and 33-plus minutes in the two victories.

Coach Leonard Hamilton and Florida State were supposed to contend for an NCAA berth out of the rugged ACC, but nobody told coach Ronnie Arrow's Islanders. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi stunned the Seminoles 70-67 in Tallahassee. Travis Bailey scored 29 points in the stunner.

Statham tied Dean Smith's college career record for wins at 879 when his NAIA school beat Freed-Hardeman 78-69 on Saturday. Williams' Tar Heels bounced back from an early-season loss to Santa Clara by rolling over BYU, Tennessee and Iowa to win the Maui Invitational. Then the Heels beat USC on Sunday night.
