Wow, San Antonio will be rocking and rolling as Memphis and Kansas battle for the national championship.
Hey, John Calipari, I am a believer now. Memphis played at a pace that was too fast for UCLA in the national semifinals. The Tigers will not back down if there is a fast pace in the championship game. Memphis has great ability to beat opponents off the dribble.
I would not be surprised if Kansas goes to zone at some point to slow down guards Chris Douglas-Roberts and Derrick Rose. The Jayhawks will try to make the Tigers shoot from the outside to stop the transition game.
Memphis dominates by spreading the court and using the dribble drive as a weapon. Kansas has big men playing with purpose. I was very impressed with Cole Aldrich, Sasha Kaun, Darnell Jackson and Darrell Arthur and they have to help out when Memphis penetrates and goes to the basket.
This is an unselfish Tigers team with players who understand their roles. They accept those roles and are not worried about scoring points. Look at what Joey Dorsey did in the national semis, grabbing 15 rebounds without scoring a point.
Rose has been outstanding in the tournament, keeping turnovers to a minimum (he had just one against UCLA). He reminds me of Jason Kidd; Rose is explosive, can score and he has dominated some super point guards in the tournament. Think about his performances against Drew Neitzel, DJ Augustin and Darren Collison. My friends, those are three outstanding players!
Rose makes people better. He has raised the level of his game and if the draft was tomorrow, he would be my choice as the No. 1 pick.
Kansas has a resilient team and the perimeter talent is as deep as anyone in America. Brandon Rush was terrific in the national semifinal; Mario Chalmers will be a factor on defense. Then look at Sherron Collins, who made a number big plays, and veteran Russell Robinson and Bill Self will have a lot of bodies to throw at Douglas-Roberts and Rose.
I look at the coaches and both have been in big games all season long. Self and Calipari showed in the national semifinals that experience was not a factor. Both will have their teams prepared for this showdown.
Kansas dominated in every facet of the game against North Carolina in building a 40-12 lead. Then the Jayhawks weathered the storm. Will that performance take away the stamina of the Jayhawks?
I think we are in for a great championship game. These teams match up well and it should be awesome with a capital A!
