Duke's season ended on Saturday as West Virginia dominated on the glass in a 73-67 upset. Wow, for the second straight year, the Blue Devils were taken out before the Sweet 16.
Bob Huggins' Mountaineers had a 47-27 rebound advantage, including 19 offensive boards (Duke had 20 defensive rebounds, so it was almost even on that end). West Virginia converted second chance opportunities in taking control of the game in the second half. Overall the Mountaineers had a 17-5 edge in second-chance points.
Duke's lack of success shooting the three was also a major factor. It hurt the Blue Devils in the ACC semifinals against Clemson, and it was a killer Saturday. Mike Krzyzewski's team is not going to win too many games when it shoots five-of-22 on trifectas and at one point Duke missed 15 straight three-pointers.
It was clear that Duke had no post presence inside as West Virginia scored inside and often held the Blue Devils to just one shot. Clearly the Mountaineers were the better team on Saturday.
In the future, Duke has to get better balance. It cannot be a one-dimensional shooting team, putting up so many threes. It was their downfall in the ACC tourney and on Saturday.
It was a tough way for DeMarcus Nelson to finish his career with two subpar games in the NCAA tournament. Nelson had a good senior season, but maybe was physically tired and fatigued at the end.
At Duke, the standard of excellence is not measured on wins and losses. My friends, it is judged on whether or not you hang up another banner. Mike Krzyzewski is all about hanging up banners and not just getting into the big dance. Other schools consider a successful season by punching a ticket to March Madness. Duke went 28-6, and most people would build a statue for their coach with that record.
