PLAYER OF THE WEEK:Joe Alexander, West Virginia
He totaled 61 points and made big plays in wins over Pittsburgh and St. John's. Bob Huggins' Mountaineers finished 11-7 in Big East play and 22-9 overall.
COACH OF THE WEEK:Keno Davis, Drake
The Bulldogs clinched their first NCAA berth since 1971 by rolling over the field in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Drake won its three games by an average margin of 20 ppg.
TEAMS OF THE WEEK:North Carolina and Ohio State
It was a tough week for the Tar Heels following the tragic death of student body president Eve Carson. North Carolina responded with its biggest win of the season, a victory at Duke. That gave Roy Williams and company the ACC regular-season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. Tyler Hansbrough came up big, finishing with 15 points and 15 rebounds while Danny Green provided a spark off the bench.
The Buckeyes moved a step closer to an NCAA berth by beating Purdue and Michigan State. Those victories should impress the NCAA tournament selection committee.
DIAPER DANDY OF THE WEEK:OJ Mayo, USC
He has been playing very well lately. Mayo had 25 points and eight rebounds in a win over Stanford. Earlier in the week he had 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists in a victory over California.
SHOCKS OF THE WEEK:William and Mary over Virginia Commonwealth and Penn State over Indiana
The Colonial Athletic Association's top seed was stunned by William and Mary. Without its top two scorers and rebounders, Penn State used four freshmen and stunned the Hoosiers. Indiana came in 14-3 in Big Ten play while Penn State entered 6-11 in league action. That was shock city, baby!
