This and that from the world of sports

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Each week I take a look at the world of sports:

• Congratulations to Duke men's coach Mike Krzyzewski and Rutgers women's coach C. Vivian Stringer as each earned career win No. 800. For both, they have enjoyed an incredible run and it's far from over. Their numbers are going to grow and grow. They have enjoyed great success and I wish them both the best in the future.

• Wow, it has been wild to see how many players have changed teams the last few days. Welcome to the world of NFL free agency my friends. The dollars have been flying around and it has been incredible. Some big names have moved elsewhere: Asante Samuel, Isaac Bruce, Alan Faneca and Michael Turner to name a few. You are going to need a scorecard to keep track of everything going on.

• Think about the situation with Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds. It just keeps going on and on. Now the FBI is investigating whether or not Clemens lied when he appeared in Congress. It's sad for baseball fans since this story just won't go away.

• The battle for No. 1 in college basketball is interesting. I feel North Carolina deserves the nod right now. It is good to know that unlike football, this will all be settled on the court with the greatest spectacle, three weeks of excitement galore known as March Madness. The Tar Heels had quite a battle at Boston College as Tyrese Rice put on a show, scoring 34 points in the first half. North Carolina found a way to the winner's circle in the second half with a great comeback.

• How tough is it to win back-to-back emotional road games in college hoops? Look at what happened with Tennessee following its win over Memphis: A loss to Vanderbilt, followed by a close call against Kentucky. Bruce Pearl's team will still be heard from this postseason.

• How about a salute to South Florida for breaking its 23-game Big East road losing streak? Dominique Jones hit the winning shot as Stan Heath's squad won at Rutgers.

• The Lakers just keep on rolling. Notice that Kobe Bryant is not complaining about the talent on the team right now. Phil Jackson has done a good job and watch out for this team when Andrew Bynum comes back.

• Ernie Els showed he is back with his win at the Honda Classic. Maybe he can give Tiger Woods some competition in the near future.

Dick Vitale coached the Pistons and the University of Detroit before broadcasting ESPN's first college basketball game in December 1979. Send him a question for possible use on ESPNEWS.
