Top coaching tandems

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

As we move closer to Selection Sunday, I was thinking about how far women's college basketball has come over the years. You have so much greater exposure for the women's game than in the past.

There are many women's college basketball coaches getting national publicity as well. Think about it, there are a number of school featuring a dynamic duo of super sideline leaders in both men's and women's hoops.

It is time to look at my elite eight schools with terrific tandems patrolling the sidelines in both sports. They bring excitement to their respective sports on their campuses.

Let's start out in Storrs, Connecticut. You don't often have two Hall of Famers working at the same school, but the Huskies are fortunate enough to have Jim Calhoun and Geno Auriemma. Between them they have won seven national championships! Wow, what a special tandem for the Huskies. The state of Connecticut loves its two successful programs.

Pat Summitt is numero uno in wins among Division I coaches, men or women. Bruce Pearl has done an amazing job in his three seasons in Knoxville. He has rebuilt and restructured the Tennessee men's program into a national championship contender. Together they have brought magic to the fans of the Orange and White. I am looking forward to May 16, when we will honor coach Summitt and Bob Knight at my Dick Vitale gala in Sarasota as we raise money for the V Foundation!

Down at Duke, Mike Krzyzewski has enjoyed another super season. Joanne McCallie has stepped in for Gail Goestenkors and kept the women's program among the best in the ACC. They form a dynamic duo worth watching.

Fans on Tobacco Road know there is a special duo down in Chapel Hill. Roy Williams is a Hall of Famer while Sylvia Hatchell just keeps on rolling on with her squad.

Staying in the ACC, Maryland has intense leaders of their respective programs. Gary Williams is a future Hall of Famer. Brenda Frese recently gave birth to twins but when she is on the sideline she is so special. Both have won national championships.

Ohio State has a great pair in Thad Matta and Jim Foster. Matta is trying to keep a streak alive as he has won at least 20 games in every season as a head coach. Foster has over 600 career W's on his resume.

Texas fans love Rick Barnes and Goestenkors has provided steady leadership in her first season in Austin. For the Texas women, the record in league play is disappointing, but believe me, the future is bright with her presence.

At Notre Dame, there are steady veteran coaches in Mike Brey and Muffet McGraw.

Wow, there you have it, my elite eight coaching tandems in men's and women's college basketball. They are special leaders on and off the court.

Dick Vitale coached the Pistons and the University of Detroit before broadcasting ESPN's first college basketball game in December 1979. Send him a question for possible use on ESPNEWS.
