This and that

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

• This could be the wildest college football season ever. Does anyone want to be number one? OK, Ohio State is there for now, but really, where is a truly dominant team? USC and LSU were supposed to be powers, but the Trojans have struggled the last two weeks, losing to Stanford and escaping against Arizona, both at home. The Tigers and California were 1-2 last week but both went down. Wow, it is parity my friends and who knows which teams will survive and advance to the national championship game. South Florida could really be in the hunt; right now coach Jim Leavitt only cares about one thing – Rutgers this week.

• Do you remember when Florida State and Miami were dominant teams? Now they are not the best in the Sunshine State. They meet this week and my, times have changed. These once-proud teams now are very average at best. Florida State lost to Wake Forest in consecutive seasons (not a knock to the Demon Deacons), but for years that was unthinkable. The Hurricanes will eventually turn things around under Randy Shannon, but for now it is struggle city.

• Dennis Franchione has to be feeling some heat. His decision to do a newsletter to give boosters special information was a bad one, and athletic director Bill Byrne was not happy about it. Then the Aggies were blown out by Texas Tech last weekend. By the way, one A&M player guaranteed his team would beat the Red Raiders. So much for that bold prediction. I felt Franchione was wrong to give information to people paying extra for it.

• Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are simply in a class by themselves. Brady showed that once again by throwing five touchdown passes against the previously-unbeaten Cowboys. When it is all said and done, I feel that they will go down as the two greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. They may meet in a few weeks and both could come in unbeaten. Wow, that would be a special showdown.

• LaDainian Tomlinson took his frustration out on the Oakland Raiders, putting on a show. All he did was reach the end zone four times! Vikings rookie Adrian Peterson did a number against the Bears defense too, totaling over 300 yards overall. Remember, Peterson is just a rookie, but he made several big plays in a win at Soldier Field.

• Midnight Madness was a sign that college basketball is back, baby! I can't wait for the regular season to tip it off, and it should be a super season. I am going with North Carolina to cut down the nets in San Antonio, but there are a number of special teams out there capable of making a run. The NCAA tournament is the most special three weeks in sports.

• What a weekend for Kentucky fans! First Rupp Arena was packed as Billy Gillispie unveiled his new squad. Then the football team stunnedNo. 1 LSU, 43-37. Sounds like a halftime score in hoops. Andre Woodson is a special athlete as Kentucky's QB. He made so many big plays in the win over the Tigers.

• The Colorado Rockies got off to a great start by winning the first two games of the NLCS in Arizona. Then the home fans survived the cold, wet weather to see their team go up 3-0 behind Josh Fogg. Clint Hurdle has done an amazing job and it is not a fluke that this team went on an incredible streak. The Rockies have a solid line-up and a lot of very good young pitching. America has not seen much of this club during the season, so it comes as a surprise, especially since Arizona and San Diego were the frontrunners in the NL West for most of the season.

• As I said on Mike and Mike, I feel the Yankees would be making a mistake by not re-signing Joe Torre. The longer this drags on, the better chance for Torre to return as the team's manager. The Yankees would not have made the playoffs if it wasn't for his leadership. The Yankees were 21-29, but he was able to right the ship. The future is brighter with young pitchers like Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes.

• The Orioles decided to go in a different direction and Leo Mazzone is out there as one of the most highly-regarded pitching coaches. It will be interesting to see where he lands this off-season.
