This and that

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Each week I'll talk about the world of sports…

• We hear about the steroid accusations, the Tim Donaghy controversy and then the cheating … when will this end? What about Bill Belichick and the Patriots and the spying in their game against the Jets? Doesn't anyone care about the integrity of the game and doing the right thing? Belichick is a guy who has motivated his teams to win three Super Bowls. I felt the commissioner should have come down extremely hard on the Patriots, suspending the coach for one game. It is all about accountability and when doing something wrong, it is about paying the price for bad judgment. One message, loud and clear, was given as Belichick was fined $500,000, the team was fined $250,000 and a first-round pick voided if the team makes the playoffs. With all of the negative publicity from this, the fines were right. I still believe the coach should have been taken away from the sidelines for one or two games … shame on you coach Belichick!

• Meanwhile, coach Wade Wilson may have a valid argument about a double standard in the NFL. He used something to aide him in a health-related matter, and did nothing to impugn the integrity of the game, yet he received a five-game suspension and a $100,000 fine? Maybe commissioner Goodell should re-evaluate his position on this punishment.

• Look at all of the football talent coming out of the state of Florida. Sure, people know about Florida, Florida State and Miami, but think about what else is going on down there. South Florida stunned Auburn, and Central Florida, in the opening game at its new stadium, gave #6 Texas a real scare. Florida Atlantic, coached by Howard Schnellenberger, knocked off Big Ten member Minnesota. Florida International was respectable in its loss to the Hurricanes. My friends, there is plenty of talent to go around in the Sunshine State!

• Who would have thought Notre Dame would open the season 0-3 and not score an offensive touchdown in any of those losses? It is back to the drawing board for Charlie Weis and company, but things won't get much easier. Look at the upcoming schedule as see Michigan State is 3-0 and next on the docket. Purdue's offensive has been impressive early, and they are on the schedule. UCLA was ranked before losing to Utah. Boston College is never easy. Oh, and USC comes to South Bend also. It is a tough time for the fans of the Golden Dome.

• By the way, do you think the Michigan fans will be killing Lloyd Carr again this week? After a 38-0 blowout of the Irish, the fans of the Maize and Blue can relax for a few days.

• Alabama fans must think Nick Saban is earning his money. His big salary didn't matter when the Tide won a see-saw battle with Arkansas in an SEC showdown. That coupled with Auburn's early-season troubles (with losses to South Florida and Mississippi State) have Alabama fans elated.

• I went to sleep on Friday night with the Yankees trailing the Red Sox, 7-2. When I woke up in the morning and saw the New Yorkers won 8-7, I was totally shocked. As it turns out, that was a very big victory for the Yankees as they try to lock up the wild card. That was also a confidence boost for the future, knowing they can hit the Red Sox bullpen.

• Jon Kitna showed a lot of guts, coming back from an injury to help the Lions move to 2-0. Remember when he said the team would win 10 games this season? Rod Marinelli's squad is off to a good start.

• The Houston Texans look like they are for real following an impressive win at Carolina. This week should be interesting as Matt Schaub battles Peyton Manning.

• Tiger Woods is Tiger Woods … all he did was win The Tour Championship by eight strokes. Once again, he showed why he is the world's best golfer.

• How about a salute to Lindsay Davenport? She played singles in a tournament in Indonesia, her first time since giving birth. Davenport captured the championship, beating a couple of high seeds in the process.
