This and that

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Each week I'll talk about the world of sports …

• It did not take long for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to react to the Michael Vick plea bargain. Within hours of Vick signing his plea, Goodell pulled no punches and suspended the quarterback indefinitely without pay. The commissioner's statement was very strong as the language was to the point. Goodell was unhappy that Vick lied to him, to Falcons' owner Arthur Blank, to his Falcons' teammates and to the fans. Mr. Goodell is not playing games and this is a message to many other athletes – it is time they shape up. The code of conduct is something to be taken seriously.

• Reggie Miller decided to end any thoughts of a comeback. The Celtics have their big three with Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, and the addition of Miller would have been something! Miller will stay in the world of television while continuing his quest to be in the Hollywood scene in the movies. Boston did have a nice addition, signing James Posey as a free agent.

• USA basketball is putting together all the pieces to bring back the gold. It is very obvious from the early results at the FIBA Americas tournament that this American squad is very explosive. They have great balance and chemistry and that's exactly what Jerry Colangelo and Mike Krzyzewski had in mind.

• Do you think the Red Sox are for real? Just look at the hitting in the series against the White Sox. Terry Francona's team swept the four games by a 46-7 margin. That's incredible, baby! Boston scored in double figures in all four games, shredding the White Sox pitching staff. Ozzie Guillen could not have been too happy.

• Here's a message to all of those traditionalists who went bananas when Major League Baseball added the wild card to the postseason. Forget about it, the wild card has been a great asset. Just look at how much meaning it has added to the races this season. With around 30 games left, there are so many teams still alive and in the hunt for a playoff berth. There will be so many exciting match-ups in the quest for a shot at the postseason.

• How about a salute to Greg Maddux, who has been Mr. Consistency. He became the first pitcher in major league history to record 10 or more wins in 20 straight seasons. Not even the great Cy Young accomplished that feat! He has had his struggles at times this season, though he got that 10th "W" Friday night at Philadelphia. Wow!

• The Little League World Series had so much drama in it. First there was the incredible game-saving catch when Walpole, Massachusetts beat Hamilton, Ohio early in the event. There was Japan's game-winning walk-off grand slam on Saturday in the International championship. Then Warner-Robbins, Georgia gave the Peachtree State another LLWS title with a home run in extra innings to beat Japan.

• Hey Stephon Marbury, do everyone a favor and do what you do best … handle the rock and get to the goal. You have no clue when you start talking about hunting vs. dogfighting and the Michael Vick case. It is an embarrassment to all, but mostly to yourself.
