Sept. 30, 1934

With the St. Louis Cardinals one game ahead of the New York Giants going into the final day of the season, Dizzy Dean seven-hits the Cincinnati Reds, 9-0, for his 30th victory.

In the ninth inning, the Cardinals learn they won the National League pennant as the Giants had lost, 8-5, to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Dean gets out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation to post his major-league leading seventh shutout, his third in a season-ending seven-game winning streak, to the delight of 35,274 pennant-fevered fans at Sportsman's Park in St. Louis.

Dean's record is 30-7. His winning percentage of .811 is 251 points higher than the .560 the Cardinals (65-51) had when Dizzy wasn't involved in the decision.

Dean will be the last National League pitcher to win 30 games in the 20th century.
