Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Taiwan begins dominance in LLWS By Larry Schwartz Special to ESPN.com Aug. 23, 1969 Taiwan begins its domination of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. It wins the 23rd annual tournament before a crowd of 30,000, which includes thousands of Chinese waving Republic of China flags. Tsu-Yen Chen, a slender right-hander who struck out 21 in Taiwan's opening-game, nine-inning win over Canada, shuts out Santa Clara, Calif., 5-0. He fans 11, walks two and allows three hits. This is the first of 10 titles in 13 years for Taiwan. Mickey Mantle is the color man on ABC-TV's "Wide World of Sports" broadcast of the game.
