Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Marino's glory days  In celebration of the Miami Dolphins retiring Dan Marino's No. 13, ESPN Classic will present a Dan Marino Jersey Retirement Special today from 2-8 p.m. ET. ESPN's Mark Schwarz will host from 4-7 p.m. LIVE with interviews and commentary from Don Shula, John Offerdahl, A.J. Duhe, Butch Davis and Dwight Stephenson on the legendary QB. In addition to the live portion, ESPN Classic will bring you some of the most memorable games and moments from Marino's college and professional career. From his dramatic touchdown pass to beat Georgia in the 1982 Sugar Bowl to his record breaking performances in the NFL, ESPN Classic will bring you the very best of Dan Marino. Dan Marino throws a 33-yard TD pass with 35 seconds remaining to lift the Panthers to 24-20 victory over No. 2-ranked Georgia. The lead changes hands five different times in this battle highlighted by the duel between Marino and Georgia's Herschel Walker.
Dan Marino and Mark Duper make their first-ever starts for the Dolphins against the Bills. These two offenses explode for 971 total yards in an overtime battle won by the Bills 38-35. Dan Marino, who replaced David Woodley as the Dolphins starting quarterback, completed 19 of 29 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns.
Dan Marino stung the St. Louis secondary for 429 yards and three touchdowns as the Miami Dolphins won their fifth game without a loss by beating the Cardinals, 36-28. The 429 yards broke David Woodley's single game Dolphins' record of 408 yards. Marino completed 24 of 36 passes and increased his league-leading total of touchdown passes to 15.
Miami went 14-2, won the AFC East Championship and knocked off Pittsburgh, 45-28, in the AFC Title Game. The Dolphins scored a league high 513 points in the regular season, averaging better than 32 points per game. Marino and his "Marks brothers" receivers - Mark Duper and Mark Clayton - set numerous NFL records, including completions (362), yards passing (5,084) and touchdown passes (48). Clayton set his own mark of 18 TD receptions. In Super Bowl XIX, however, San Francisco downed the Dolphins, 38-16.
Marino passed for a conference leading 30 touchdowns and Miami won the AFC East with a 10-6 record. Marino and the Dolphins defeated Montana and the Chiefs, 27-17, in an AFC Wild Card Game. But they blew a 21-6 halftime lead in the divisional playoffs and fell to eventual AFC Champion San Diego, 22-21.
A cannon of an arm and a lightning-quick release helped Dan Marino become the most prolific passer in NFL history.
