ESPN Classic Remembers 9/11


ESPN Classic remembers the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, with a four-hour special commemorating a day that none of us will ever forget on Wednesday from 7-11 p.m. ET. From the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, to the thousands who lost their lives, to the heroic efforts of the Fire Department in New York City, to the stoppage of all athletic events and the beginning of the healing process when games resumed, everyone was somehow effected.

U.S. Air Force F-16's fly over before the start of Game 6 of the 2001 World Series, and after that the D-Backs flew away from the Yankees, 15-2.

ESPN Classic's programming encompasses a variety of tributes. First, the network focuses on the real heroes as NFL Films presents "The Bravest Team," a look at the FDNY football team. Then, a look at SportsCenter on 9/11, followed by an MLB documentary and concluding with The First November: World Series 2001 between the Diamondbacks and Yankees. Classic September 11
Wednesday, Sept. 11
7-11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m.-midnight PT

  • 7 p.m. - NFL Films: The Bravest Team
    A one-hour documentary that chronicles the struggle of the New York Fire Department's football team to return to the playing field in the aftermath of September 11. That day, 348 firefighters lost their life, including 21 who were team members -- more than one-third of the squad. Cameras follow the players as they prepare for and compete in their seven-game schedule.

  • 8 p.m. - SportsCenter Flashback: Classic Remembers 9/11
    This program takes a look at the incidents of September 11th through SportsCenter pieces and stories that aired that day.

    9/11 remembrance
    The baseball world, particularly at Coors Field, joined the rest of the nation in remembrance of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

  • 9 p.m. - Baseball Documentary:
    MLB on 9/11

    MLB Films put together this show chronicling all the baseball events surrounding the 9/11 incident. The lead-up to the games that day, that day, and the resuming of games following the tragedy.

  • 10 p.m. - The First November:
    World Series 2001

    A look back at the 2001 World Series and all the events that forced the games to be played in November. How the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees coped with the September 11th terroist attacks and staged one of the greatest World Series series in a number of years. The D-Backs won it in their last at-bat in Game 7.
