Classic Holiday Bowl
Saturday, Dec. 21
7 a.m. - 1 a.m. ET

7 a.m. - 1989 Holiday Bowl: Penn State vs. BYU
Gary Brown stole the ball from Ty Detmer, who had thrown for a Holiday Bowl record 576 yards, and ran 53 yards for a touchdown to clinch Penn State's 50-39 victory over Brigham Young. It was one of the wildest games in the Holiday Bowl, which has a history of high scores and incredible finishes. The 89 points fell two short of the Holiday Bowl record, set by BYU and Southern Methodist in 1980. Jim McMahon of BYU threw for 446 yards, the previous passing record, in leading the Cougars back to victory in that game.

Detmer couldn't bring back these Cougars, although he completed 42 of 60 passes. His second touchdown pass, a 3-yarder to Brent Nyberg with 2:34 to go brought BYU within two points, 41-39. The 19th-ranked Cougars, who had driven 90 yards, went for two points. But Detmer's pass was intercepted by linebacker Andre Collins, who returned it 102 yards, with Penn State awarded the two points. Then Brown made sure the 18th-ranked Nittany Lions stayed in front when he took the ball out of Detmer's hands as the quarterback tried to throw and raced untouched to the end zone. Blair Thomas added 186 yards on 35 carries.

10 a.m. - 1991 Holiday Bowl: Iowa vs. BYU
On the verge of leading Brigham Young to its first victory in the last three Holiday Bowls, Ty Detmer was intercepted by Iowa's Carlos James with 16 seconds left and the Cougars had to settle for a 13-13 tie with the Hawkeyes. Detmer's pass was deflected by receiver Byron Rex at the 10-yard line and caught at the goal line by James, who returned it to the Iowa 13.

Detmer had driven the Cougars from their 23 to the Iowa 18. He conceded that the Cougars could have settled for a potential game-winning field goal, but went for the TD on first down with 26 seconds left. Detmer finished with 29 completions in 44 attempts for 350 yards, with two TDs and one interception. Iowa's Matt Rodgers was 19 of 28 for 221 yards, with one interception.

Noon - 1992 Holiday Bowl: Hawaii vs. Illinois
Travis Sims hammered up the middle for touchdowns of 6 yards and 1 yard to lead Hawaii to a 27-17 win in the Holiday Bowl. The Rainbow Warriors completed the best season in school history at 11-2. It was another disappointment for Illinois, which lost its third straight bowl game and fourth in its last five bowl appearances.

Sims, gained 112 yards on 28 carries in Hawaii's triple-option attack. Quarterback Michael Carter, the game's offensive MVP, completed 6 of 16 passes for 115 yards and gained 105 yards on 21 carries. Illinois quarterback Jason Verduzco completed 26 of 34 passes for 248 yards.

2 p.m. - 1993 Holiday Bowl: Ohio State vs. BYU
Raymont Harris set Holiday Bowl records with 235 yards and 39 carries and scored on three short runs to lift No. 11 Ohio State to a 28-21 victory over Brigham Young. BYU kept the Buckeyes on edge until the final seconds. A 52-yard pass from John Walsh to Eric Drage gave BYU the ball at the Ohio State 6 with 32 seconds left. Tim Nowatzke dropped a third-down pass in the end zone, and Walsh overthrew Drage in the end zone on fourth down.

BYU also moved to the Ohio State 22 with just more than two minutes left, but Buckeye All-America tackle Dan Wilkinson deflected Walsh's third-down pass. Walsh then underthrew Nowatzke, who was open, on fourth-and-7. Walsh completed 25 of 44 passes for 389 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Harris carried seven times for 54 yards, including the last yard up the middle for OSU's winning touchdown with 4:11 left in the third quarter.

4 p.m. - 1998 Holiday Bowl: Arizona vs. Nebraska
Keith Smith threw for one fourth-quarter touchdown and scrambled to set up the game-winning, 1-yard plunge by Kelvin Eafon with 6:08 to go as the No. 5 Wildcats beat No. 14 Nebraska 23-20. Smith led the Wildcats 68 yards to the winning score. Just when Nebraska and Arizona were settling into a defensive struggle, the Holiday Bowl reverted to its wild past.

There were three lead changes in the final 15 minutes, some long passes and long runs, and finally, a big interception by All-American Chris McAlister. McAlister capped a big game with a leaping interception of Eric Crouch's pass with 3:03 left. McAlister jumped in front of Shevin Wiggins at about the 8 and returned it 22 yards.

Arizona had two touchdowns called back due to penalties and another scoring chance negated, all in the game's first 18 minutes. Trung Canidate gained 101 yards on 22 carries for the Wildcats.

6 p.m. - 1999 Holiday Bowl: Washington vs. Kansas State
Jonathan Beasley capped a 20-play, 92-yard drive with a 1-yard keeper for his third touchdown of the day that lifted No. 7 Kansas State a 24-20 win over Washington. The winning drive ate up 9 minutes, 54 seconds. Beasley completed 15 of 31 passes for 216 yards and gained 48 yards on 20 carries.

Marques Tuiasosopo was 18-of-27 for 197 yards with one interception and ran 11 times for 30 yards for Washington. Washington had beaten K-State four times dating to 1950, all in Seattle, outscoring the Wildcats 150-13.

8 p.m. - 2000 Holiday Bowl: Texas vs. Oregon
While all eyes were focused on Texas QB Chris Simms, it was Oregon's Joey Harrington who was the best quarterback in the Holiday Bowl. Harrington threw for a pair of TDs, ran for a score and caught a halfback pass for yet another Ducks touchdown, leading Oregon to a thrilling 35-30 victory over Texas. Harrington completed 19 of 30 passes for 273 yards. Simms was 17-of-33 for 245 yards and ran for one touchdown.

Major Applewhite
Major Applewhite threw for a career-high 473 yards and 4 TDs.
Texas helped contribute to another wild Holiday Bowl finish, too, but in the wrong way. The Longhorns moved to the Ducks' 22 with about three minutes to play, but their two heralded freshmen wide receivers, B.J. Johnson and Roy Williams, each dropped a pass in the end zone. Johnson dropped another one at the 15 that he might have scored on.

10 p.m. - 2001 Holiday Bowl: Washington vs. Texas
Texas QB Major Applewhite went out in style. Applewhite became a Lone Star legend when he rallied the Longhorns to their greatest comeback win ever, as the ninth-ranked Longhorns outlasted No. 20 Washington, 47-43. Applewhite, who completed 37 of 55 passes, ended his successful and often controversial run with a career-best 473 yards and 4 TDs.

The Longhorns trailed 36-20 entering the fourth quarter, but Applewhite -- who threw three interceptions in the second quarter -- was already in the process of leading Texas to scores on six of its last seven possessions. After Willie Hurst gave Washington a 43-40 lead on a 34-yard touchdown run with 1:49 left, Applewhite moved the Longhorns 80 yards in seven plays, with running back Ivan Williams scoring on a 3-yard run with 38 seconds left.
