Classic Heartbreakers Week


ESPN Classic will continue its theme weeks with a Classic Heartbreakers Week from Monday, Feb. 3 - Friday, Feb. 7. Classic Heartbreakers Week will feature games where the winner has rallied from near insurmountable odds to win and the loser is left in disbelief, often looking back to one play or one series that led to their downfall. Included is John Elway leading the Broncos over the Browns in the 1987 AFC Championship and Jason Williams and Shane Battier helping Duke rally from a 10-point deficit in the final 54 seconds to beat Maryland in 2001. Here's our complete schedule:

Monday, Feb. 3
9 p.m. - Classic MLB
1986 ALCS, Game 5
Red Sox at Angels

Dave Henderson hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth and a sacrifice fly in the 11th to give the Red Sox a shocking come-from-behind 7-6 victory. Don Baylor added a two-run homer for Boston.

Tuesday, Feb. 4
9 p.m. - Classic NFL
1987 AFC Championship
Browns at Broncos

John Elway threw three TD passes, the last a 20-yard strike to Sammy Winder, as the Broncos held off Cleveland, 38-33. Ernest Byner, who caught seven passes for 120 yards, rushed for 67 yards and scored twice, fumbled at the Broncos' 8 yard line late in the game. Bernie Kosar threw for 356 yards and three TDs as Cleveland rallied from an 18-point hole to tie it at 31.

10:30 p.m. - Classic NFL
Super Bowl XXV: Giants vs. Bills

The Giants hold on for a Super Bowl title when Scott Norwood misses a 47-yard field goal wide right in the final seconds and New York won, 20-19. MVP Ottis Anderson rushed 21 times for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Wednesday, Feb. 5
9 p.m. - Classic MLB
1984 NLCS, Game 5
Cubs at Padres

Steve Garvey's RBI single in the seventh inning capped a decisive four-run rally that helped the Padres become the first team to rally from a two-game deficit to win a five-game series with a 6-3 victory. Garvey had eight hits in 20 at bats with seven RBI in the series to earn MVP honors.

Carlos Boozer and the Blue Devils staged a remarkable comeback to upend the shocked Terps.
Thursday, Feb. 6
9 p.m. - Classic College Basketball
Duke at Maryland (2001)

Duke overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 54 seconds of regulation and Shane Battier scored Duke's last six points in overtime as the Blue Devils prevailed, 98-96. With the Blue Devils trailing 90-80, Jason Williams went to work. Williams scored eight points -- including two 3-pointers -- in a 13-second span to get Duke within 90-88 with 41 seconds to play.

Friday, Feb. 7
9 p.m. - Classic College Football
Florida State at Virginia (1995)

Tiki Barber had 311 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns and the Cavaliers stopped second-ranked Florida State inches from the goal line on the final play for a 33-28 victory that snapped the Seminoles' 29-game winning streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Barber rushed for 193 yards on 31 carries, caught three passes for 45 yards and returned six punts for 73 yards. Virginia's Mike Groh was 19-of-37 for 302 yards and two TDs. Florida State's Danny Kanell completed 32 of 67 passes for 454 yards and three touchdowns, but was only 10-of-29 for 134 yards and no TDs in the second half. Each QB threw three interceptions. Warrick Dunn had two TDs for FSU.
