Wednesday, November 19, 2003 Classic New York ESPN Classic celebrates the glorious history of the New York sports scene with two days of programs highlighting some of the Big Apple's best moments. When you play in New York, you play on the world's biggest stage.
The most storied team in all of professional sports, the New York Yankees, resides in the Bronx. Led by such icons as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle, the Yankees have won a record 25 World Series.
The New York Mets, a subway ride away in Queens, have won two championships since their innaugural season in 1962. The 1969 "Miracle Mets," a 100-1 longshot when the season began, claimed the team's first World Series title. The New York Knicks, playing in the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, have won two NBA titles. In one of the NBA's classic moments, injured Knicks center Willis Reed's appearance in Game 7 of the 1970 Finals inspired his team to a 113-99 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers and its first championship.
Madison Square Garden is also the home of the New York Rangers. The Rangers ended 54 years of frustration in 1994 when they claimed their fourth Stanley Cup championship. Out on Long Island, New York Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cup titles from 1980-83. In one of the most memorable games in NHL history, the Islanders won their first championship in a thrilling Game 6 overtime classic against the Philadelphia Flyers. New York's football teams had their share of glory as well. The Jets, led by quarterback Joe Namath, won the 1969 Super Bowl. The Giants won Super Bowls in 1987 and 1991 led by all-everything linebacker Lawrence Taylor.
ESPN Classic will present great games and profiles of these teams and athletes throughout the weekend. Here's our Classic New York schedule: Saturday, Sept. 23 - ESPN Classic New York

January 12, 1969 Jets vs. Baltimore Colts MVP QB Joe Namath guarantees a win then leads the Jets to a 16-7 victory.
Baltimore leads 3-0, but a two-run home run by Donn Clendenon in the sixth, after Cleon Jones' shoe was nicked by a pitch (shoe polish on the ball proved it,) and three more runs in their final two at bats secure a 5-3 Mets victory and a four games to one World Series victory.
Though Syracuse's Pearl Washington sets the conference tournament record with 14 assists and is the tournament MVP, his last second shot is blocked as St John's wins 70-69.
Patrick Ewing's dunk gives the Knicks the lead for good on the way to a 94-90 victory and a berth in the Finals for the first time in 21 years
