Watters to Ravens? Not so, says Holmgren

Aug. 21
There have been whispers inside league circles that the Baltimore Ravens may still be trying to get Mike Holmgren engaged in dialogue about a running back, which one would presume is veteran Ricky Watters.

Ricky Watters rushed for 1,242 yards last season.

Not so, according to Holmgren.

"I am committed to Ricky for this season," the Seattle Seahawks head coach and general manager said Monday.

What about Shaun Alexander, who has been slow to embrace the intricate parts of the offense, such as blocking and receiving? Interestingly, Holmgren briefly hesitated.

"You never say never, but I'm 95 percent sure I'm not going to move either one," said Holmgren. "I think Shaun is a good football player. He's eventually going to be our starter. I'm not really willing to take that step [trading Watters or Alexander] because I think we're going to be a pretty good football team."

As for the Ravens' search, veteran Terry Allen will start Thursday night against Carolina so that the team's brain trust can determine whether he even has a chance to be productive. The Ravens are likely to make a move when rosters are trimmed at the end of the month, and teams might be willing to move a running back for a low-round draft pick.

The primary profile the Ravens are looking for is a runner who can be productive between the tackles and one who does not fumble. Any back who turns over the football is not welcome because the Ravens know that the foundation of their team is the defense.
