RENO, Nevada -- Rising featherweight contender Orlando Salido improved to 18-8-1 (12 KO's) after stopping Freddie Neal in the third frame of a scheduled 10-round contest in the main event of ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. Salido kept the pressure on before sending a blistering right hand around the guard of Neal, ending the contest with one shot and in devastating fashion. With the loss, Neal's record now stands at 17-2-2 (11). Following an uneventful first round that saw only six punches landing, Neal started to land some well placed shots against his wilder swinging and visibly faster Mexican foe. Using a conservative shot selection in the second frame, Neal was able to connect at an advantage of nearly three to one, primarily right hands. Half a minute later, a right hand ended the contest ... for Salido. Seconds into the third frame, Salido leaned to his left behind the jab while firing a blistering right hand around the guard of Neal. Salido's looping right hand connected with devastating force, sending Neal to the canvas where the Cleveland native would stumble in an attempt to get up. Upon witnessing the slip referee Vic Drakulich stopped his count and waived the contest off at 2:35 of the third round. Salido, who is 22 years old and now a fast rising prospect in the division got off to a rocky 8-7-1 start after turning pro at the age of fifteen. Salido is now 10-1 (7) in his last eleven contests against collective opposition possessing an 85 percent victory ratio.
Jones Dominates Papillion With the loss, Papillion's record now stands at 36-10-1 (24). Fighting southpaws is nothing new to Papillion who was facing his fourth lefty in just under 18 months. Unfortunately for the Louisiana native it has resulted in four losses, three coming by way of knockout and no signs of improvement. Jones used his five-inch height and impressive reach advantages to keep Papillion at a range favoring the Los Angeles native from start to finish. Jones was able to use the stick to set up left hands that backed Papillion into corners throughout the contest. Once in the corner, the results were disastrous for Papillion who was cut over the right eye by the end of round three and fighting on guts alone after the fifth frame. Papillion would land nothing more than the periodical right hands. Round six saw Jones unleash a 140-punch assault on Papillion, the second highest recorded number in the history of punchstats. Round seven was equally as lopsided. An argument for 10-8 scoring could have been made despite the fact that no knockdowns occurred. In between rounds seven and eight, Papillion was asked if he wanted to continue to which the brave warrior replied "yes." The ringside physician said otherwise and wisely put a stop to the grotesquely one-sided contest. At the time of the stoppage MaxBoxing had Jones up seven rounds to none.
