COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Super heavyweight Jason Estrada won a 6-2 decision over George Garcia at the U.S. Challenge box-off Saturday at the Olympic Training Center. With the win, he became the first boxer to win both the U.S. Challenge, an Olympic Trials qualifier, and the U.S. amateur championship three years in a row. "Basically, it's just hard work and dedication and a will to win,'' said Estrada, who's from Providence, R.I. It was also the seventh straight time he beat Garcia. The U.S. Challenge pitted the top four finishers from last week's U.S. Men's Amateur Boxing Championship against each other. The first-place finisher in each division qualified for the Pan American Games team, while the runners-up earned a place on the World Championship team. Aaron Garcia of Vista, Calif., scored an upset at featherweight with a 7-6 decision over defending amateur champion Jose Perez Jr. Raytona Whitfield, of Augusta, Ga., scored an upset at light flyweight with a 10-6 win over James Lester Jr. Andre Dirrell rallied in the fourth and last round to beat Jesus Gonzales. The two tied at 5-5 but Dirrell, of Flint, Mich., won 30-24 on total punches. |
