Garcia, Dargan score upsets at U.S. Challenge

Associated Press

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Featherweight Aaron Garcia and lightweight Karl Dargan both won upsets in the U.S. Challenge Friday at the Olympic Training Center.

The U.S. Challenge is an Olympic Trials qualifier, a box-off of the top four finishers from last week's U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships. The top finisher in the U.S. Challenge will represent the U.S. at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in August.

The second-place finisher will represent the U.S. at the 2003 World Championships in July in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Friday afternoon session pitted second place finishers against third place finishers. The evening session saw amateur champions take on the fourth-place finisher.

Garcia, 19, who finished third last week, upset featherweight (125 pounds) runner-up Mickey Bey in a 14-12 decision. Garcia won the U.S. Amateur title at bantamweight (119 pounds) in 2002, before moving up to featherweight.

Garcia, of Vista, Calif., made up for Beys' reach advantage with continual pressure.

``He was taller so it was my plan to get inside and work his body,'' Garcia said. ``I tried to work the body then go for the head and keep the pressure on him.''

Dargan, 17, who also finished third last week, used his speed to win a 16-6 decision over runner-up Weston Ferguson.

``I knew I was faster,'' said Dargan of Philadelphia. ``So I knew when he threw a punch, that I should be fast enough to get my hand out there, punch, and get it back before he could pull his hand back.''

Five bouts were won by favorite James Lester, Jr. of Detroit, the runner-up in last weeks amateur championships. Lester won a 9-7 decision over Israel Crespo at light flyweight (106 pounds).

Roberto Benitez, of New York City, won a 22-5 decision at flyweight (112 pounds) over Saul Gonzalez. Rafael Valenzuela, of Phoenix, won a 28-5 decision over Troy Wohosky at bantamweight (119 pounds).

Andre Berto, of Winter Haven, Fla., won a 16-8 decision over Anthony Dirrell at welterweight (152 pounds.) Rommel Rene, of Orlando, Fla., won an 11-9 decision over Curtis Stevens at light heavyweight.

George Garcia, of Glendale, Ariz., won a 32-13 decision over Davin King at super heavyweight (201+ pounds.)

Three of the 11 bouts in the afternoon session ended in walkovers. The finals will be Saturday night.
