MIAMI -- Former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick was jailed Monday in Miami awaiting his second deportation.
Berbick, who beat Muhammad Ali in 1981, was ordered deported in 1997 after serving 15 months of a four-year sentence convictions of rape, theft and misdemeanor assault in Florida. He broke the conditions of his 1994 parole.
"Trevor Berbick is being detained at Krome Detention Center,'' said Ana E. Santiago, spokeswoman for the U.S. Immigration and naturalization Service.
"He is a re-entry after deportation, which means after being deported he was caught trying to re-enter the country again,'' Santiago said. "He is going to be sent back to Jamaica.''
Santiago did not say where or when Berbick was arrested, or when he would be deported.
Berbick could be sent to Jamaica, where he was born and raised, or possibly to Canada, where he has lived much of the time since 1976. He spent a decade living in South Florida before returning to Canada when U.S. authorities first ordered him deported in 1997.
In 1981, Berbick beat an aging Ali, then in 1985 won the WBC heavyweight title on a decision over Pinklon Thomas. The following year, he lost the title to Mike Tyson when he was knocked out in the second round.
The detention marks the latest in a series of legal problems for Berbick.
In 1991, Berbick was convicted of misdemeanor assault for attacking his former business manager, who testified the boxer put a gun to her head and accused her of stealing $40,000 from him.
The following year, he was convicted of raping a family baby sitter and was sentenced to four years in prison.
He also was convicted in 1992 of second-degree grand theft for forging his ex-wife's signature to get a $95,000 mortgage on his Miramar home.
Berbick's age is uncertain; in 1999, legal documents gave his age as 49. |
