Harding plans to make boxing debut on Tyson card

Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Tonya Harding said Tuesday she plans to make her debut as a professional boxer while Mike Tyson tries to make a comeback.

Tyson plans to fight Clifford Etienne on Feb. 22 at The Pyramid, in Memphis, Tenn., where he lost to heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis last June.

Harding will be one of the featured bouts among the eight fights on the undercard, but organizers said an opponent has not yet been lined up.

``We couldn't put out the word we were looking for an opponent for Tonya or else it would have ruined the announcement today,'' said fight promoter Brian Young.

After giving Paula Jones a good pummeling on the Fox network show ``Celebrity Boxing'' last March, Harding said she's ready to get into the ring for real.

``It is my goal to be a future, undisputed bantamweight champion. My proven athletic ability and competitive nature will help this dream become a reality,'' the former figure skater said at a news conference with Tyson in Tunica, Miss.

The last time Harding was in the news was after she spent eight days in the Clark County, Wash., jail last August for violating probation with a drunken driving arrest. She was on probation after an ex-boyfriend accused her of assault for hitting him with a hubcap.

Harding, 31, was arrested last April after police measured her blood-alcohol level at 0.16 percent -- twice the legal limit in Washington state -- after she ran her pickup into a ditch near Battle Ground, Wash.

Harding competed in the Winter Olympics and was the 1991 and 1994 national figure skating champion but was stripped of her U.S. title and banned from competitive skating for life for her role in the January 1994 knee-clubbing assault on rival Nancy Kerrigan organized by Harding's ex-husband.

Harding has also tried to start a singing career and appeared on NBC's ``Weakest Link'' show. The twice-divorced Portland native was evicted last January from her home in Vancouver, Wash., for failing to pay rent and other costs.
