Roy Jones Jr. is closer to a possible move up to heavyweight to fight WBA champion John Ruiz. Yet a number of hurdles remain before the fight can be scheduled, including promoter Don King's ability to get a big enough site fee to make it profitable.
Jones, the undisputed light heavyweight champion, signed an agreement with King to fight for $10 million, plus a percentage of any profits. Ruiz would get $5 million.
HBO had wanted the fight for Dec. 7, but if it takes place it would more likely be in late January or February.
Jones, who successfully defended his light heavyweight titles last month against Clinton Woods, has been criticized for his refusal to take risky fights against top opponents.
He said earlier he would likely fight at about 190 pounds if he moved up to challenge Ruiz. |
