Promoters expect $19 million from live gate

Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- All but a handful of the first 1,875 tickets put on sale for the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson title fight were snapped up Wednesday.

About 50 tickets remained for sale at the end of the day. They can be purchased at the Memphis Pyramid arena and through phone and Internet sales with Ticketmaster.

Tickets for the June 8 fight go for up to $2,400 for the best seats to $500 and $250 in the arena's most remote reaches.

Promoters who are renting the 19,000-seat Pyramid for the fight control most of the tickets and will dictate how and when they are sold.

"What they do with them is really their business," said Pyramid spokesman Greg Lowry. "They'll be distributed as sponsorship packages and a variety of things. But they own those tickets."

When the Pyramid's sales windows opened at 7 a.m., several hundred people were in line to buy tickets. Sales were limited to two tickets per person.

Arena managers held a lottery to determine places in line for the ticket purchasers. No disturbances were reported.

Promoters say the fight might gross nearly $19 million from the live gate alone. That would make it the biggest live gate ever, passing the $16.8 million that Lewis and Evander Holyfield brought in for their second fight Nov. 13, 1999, in Las Vegas.

The Tyson-Lewis fight originally was planned for Las Vegas, but Nevada refused to allow it following an outburst by Tyson at a New York press conference to promote the match in January.

In addition to the lower priced tickets and the ringside seats, tickets are available in the $900 and $1,400 range. The average ticket price is more than $1,000.

Besides the multimillion-dollar gate, the fight is expected to do big business on pay-per-view sales. The joint production by HBO and Showtime networks is expected to be bought by some 1.2 million homes, at about $50 a home.
