BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Former boxing champion Roberto Duran is "recovering extremely well" from internal injuries suffered in a car crash, a hospital spokesman said Friday. Duran was a passenger in a car that crashed on a Buenos Aires highway Wednesday night, reportedly suffering a collapsed lung and several broken ribs. He was in stable condition after undergoing surgery Thursday at Argerich Hopsital. "Duran's life is totally out of danger," hospital director Santiago Sanfilippo said. "He's recovering extremely well and despite (having) some problems to speak, he said he's already thinking (of) fighting again." Before Duran puts on the gloves, he has to take off the gown. He is expected to remain hospitalized another two days. "He will stay at the hospital at least until Monday to keep our control over him, but he is doing very well," Sanfilippo said. According to the Argentine news agency Telam, the 50-year-old Panamanian boxer was riding with his son, Roberto, and two reporters when the car crashed into another before both vehicles hit a retaining wall. Duran's son suffered minor injuries, but the reporters -- Ruiz Diaz, who worked for Telam, and Luis Gimenez -- were more seriously hurt. Diaz was in a coma and Gimenez broke several ribs. A winner of four world titles, Duran has refused to retire and lost to Hector Camacho Sr. in a fight three months ago. Known as "Hands of Stone," Duran has a 104-16 career record but probably is best known for saying "No mas" and quitting during the eighth round of his rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980. Duran won his first title in 1972 at the age of 21, taking Ken Buchanan's WBA lightweight crown. His most famous victory came over Leonard for the WBC welterweight title in 1980 before the embarrassing rematch later that year. Duran, who is said to have knocked out a horse as a 16-year-old in Panama to win a $2 bet, also held the junior middleweight and middleweight titles. |
