Hopkins named Fighter of the Year

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Bernard Hopkins, who stopped Felix Trinidad Jr. in the 12th round at Madison Square Garden in New York last weekend to become the undisputed middleweight champion, has been selected Fighter of the Year by the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

Hopkins will receive his award Oct. 20 at a banquet where nine inductees will be enshrined into the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Bouie Fischer, Hopkins' trainer, has been picked as the trainer of the year.

Those to be inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame are former boxers Aaron Pryor, Antonio Cervantes, Eusebio Pedroza, Nicolino Locche and Denny Moyer; promoter Don King, announcer Jim Lampley and WBC president Jose Sulaiman.

Pascual Perez, the world flyweight champion for six years in the 1950s, will be inducted posthumously.
