LONDON -- Will McIntyre will challenge Britain's Joe Calzaghe for the WBO super middleweight title on the undercard of the Mike Tyson-Brian Nielsen heavyweight bout in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Oct. 13. Promoters announced Friday that McIntyre had been brought in as Calzaghe's challenger. Earlier this week, they had listed Hassine Cherifi of France or James Butler of the United States as the expected opponent. McIntyre, an American with 28 wins in 30 fights, has never been stopped. The unbeaten Calzaghe will be making the ninth defense of his title. "I've never been floored myself so this is the test between the granite chins of boxing," Calzaghe said. "Nobody has ever stopped McIntyre and I want to be the first and I shall be looking to do it in style. "I am punching harder than ever and I want to prove to the world that not only am I the best super middleweight but also a contender for the best `pound-for-pound' title." Calzaghe won the vacant title against Chris Eubank in October 1997. He extended his career record to 31-0 (26 knockouts) when he stopped Germany's Mario Veit in the first round in Cardiff, Wales, in April. |
