NEW YORK Chances are good that Mike Tyson will fight David Izon in Sydney, Australia, in June.
"We're just waiting to know if immigration and a few points on the promotional contract can be worked out," Shelly Finkel, Tyson's adviser, said Wednesday. "If they are, we'll go."
Jay Larkin, who runs boxing for Showtime, which televises Tyson's bouts, is in Australia to check out the 21,000-seat SuperDome, site of basketball and gymnastics at the Olympics.
A likely date for the fight is June 17 in Australia. That would mean the live telecast would be seen the night of June 16 in the United States.
Should Tyson not fight in Australia, he probably would fight Izon in Washington, D.C. Wherever the fight is, Larkin has said, it will be in June.
Anytime Tyson fights outside the United States, there is a question of his obtaining a visa because he is a convicted felon. Despite protests by various groups, Tyson was allowed to fight twice in Britain last year. He stopped Julius Francis in the second round in Manchester, England, and stopped Lou Savarese in 38 seconds in Glasgow, Scotland.
Before beating Andrew Golota in two rounds Oct. 20 in Auburn, Hills, Mich., Tyson said it would be his last fight.
Now the former undisputed heavyweight champion, who will be 35 on June 30, talks about challenging WBC-IBF champion Lennox Lewis.
So far, talk about a Tyson-Lewis match has been nothing more than that. A sticking point is that Tyson has a contact with Showtime, while Lewis is tied to HBO.
There also has been talk of Tyson challenging John Ruiz, who won the WBA title from Evander Holyfield in a rematch this month. It appears, however, that Ruiz could have a third fight against Holyfield this summer in China. |
