COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The father of former heavyweight champion Buster Douglas, himself a former amateur champion, has died of colon cancer at age 59. William L. Douglas II, who also was a pro boxer, died Thursday at his home. Douglas' record was 41-14-1 in his 13-year career, with 31 knockouts. He was the Golden Gloves middleweight champion in 1963. Buster Douglas won the undisputed heavyweight title in February 1990 with a shocking knockout of then-unbeaten Mike Tyson in the 10th round of a fight in Tokyo. Douglas went in to the fight as a 42-1 underdog. He lost the title to Evander Holyfield in his next fight on a third-round knockout, and he didn't fight again for six years. At one point, he weighed around 400 pounds and was reported to be close to death from a diabetic coma. Buster Douglas returned to the ring in 1996. William Douglas also is survived by another son, William; four grandchildren and a great-grandson. His wife, Lula Pearl Douglas, and sons Arthur and Robert, are deceased. A private service will be conducted by the Gary Memorial Chapel funeral home of Bexley. Burial will be in Glen Rest Memorial Estates.
