What if: Roy Jones vs. Sugar Ray Robinson By Thomas Gerbasi maxboxing.com | |||
It's the type of matchup that could lead hours of debate. Could Sugar Ray Robinson, the greatest pound for pound fighter of all-time, defend that mythical crown against arguably the most talented fighter of all time, Roy Jones Jr.? Well thanks to the simulation technology of Title Fight 2001, we can find out how this fight could have gone. New York City's Madison Square Garden is packed for this middleweight bout, and Joe Cortez is your referee. ROUND ONE - Robinson opens up with some flicking jabs that miss the mark. Jones leaps in and rips an uppercut to the jaw that briefly buckles Robinson's knees. Jones dances around and Robinson lands a stiff jab, getting Roy's attention. Robinson comes in fast, but Jones avoids the rush, and lands another hard uppercut. Robinson misses a couple of follow-ups and the two clinch. With twenty seconds left, Sugar Ray shows his own speed with a quick combination. A series of quick jabs follow, and Jones clinches. ROUND TO ROBINSON ROUND TWO - The chess match continues as Jones and Robinson size each other up. Robinson lands and Jones counters; they both smile. Jones clinches and after Cortez breaks them RJ lands with a crisp right hand. Jones showboats and gets nailed with a right hand by Robinson. Sugar Ray lands another right and gets Jones in the corner. Robinson flurries, but Jones slips and dips around most of the blows. Jones clinches to free himself from the corner. EVEN ROUND ROUND THREE - The two begin the round by wrestling on the inside, and Jones lands a strong uppercut once again. They clinch and Cortez warns Jones for rabbit punching. Robinson responds by landing a wicked four-punch combination, and Jones covers up. RJ gets on his horse, using his movement to elude Robinson. Robinson corners Jones and lands with a quick left hook. Robinson starts focusing on body shots, trying to slow Jones down as the bell rings. ROUND TO ROBINSON ROUND FOUR - Not much action for the first minute of the round. Jones flicks out a lazy jab and Robinson makes him pay with a stiff right hand, and then follows it with another one. Jones continues to move, and then shoots in with a quick combination. Robinson responds with a combination of his own and Jones stumbles slightly. ROUND TO ROBINSON ROUND FIVE - Falling behind on points, Jones needs to get moving. He does, landing a vicious hook to Robinson's midsection. Sugar Ray is shaken up, but he regroups quickly, landing a crisp right cross. Jones starts using his jab more, and he's scoring. ROUND TO JONES ROUND SIX - Neither man is marked, but they've got a long way to go. Both men do more posing than punching until Jones lands two blistering hooks to the ribs. Robinson winces in pain, but Cortez stops the action, warning an incredulous Jones for a low blow, and deducting a point from him. Robinson keeps swinging and missing, and Jones makes him pay with a quick combination. The round ends. ROUND TO JONES ROUND SEVEN - Jones is still moving, while Robinson stalks. Sugar Ray lands a strong left right as RJ slides along the ropes. Both fighters trade left hooks, with Robinson adding an extra hook to the body for good measure. Jones waves Robinson in, and Sugar Ray responds with an uppercut to the solar plexus that drops RJ to the canvas. Jones writhes in pain, but tries to rise. He almost makes it before falling back to the canvas. This fight is over! The time of the knockout, 1:34 seconds of round seven. Your winner, by knockout, Sugar Ray Robinson. At the time of the KO, the judges' scores read 58-56 twice, and 57-56, all in favor of Robinson.
